A Russian woman, born in 1922, discusses her experiences in Salsk (Rostov Oblast), Russia before and during WWII; life before the war; working in the local commune; the famine, during which people fished in order to survive; dekulakization; the Ukrainians and Romanians in Salsk; the German occupation; the Germans who lived in her house; the POW camps; working in a hospital; the gravesite for the dead POWs; and the retreat of the Germans, during which time many POWs were shot and some buildings were destroyed.
