    Interview Summary
    Yukiko Sugihara discusses her youth in Numazu, Japan; her marriage to Mr. Chiune Sugihara; their move to Kovno (now Kaunas), Lithuania after his diplomatic posting; her memory of lines forming outside of the embassy beginning in July 1940; her husband's request to the Japanese government to grant him permission to grant visas, and the denial of that request; her husband's decision to grant transit visas to the Jewish people who wanted to leave Lithuania; the thousands of visas that he wrote over a period of about a month; his concerns about the possible consequences; her husband's sadness about his demotion after he returned to Japan due to his actions in Lithuania, but also his contentment that he had been able to help those people.

    The Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project conducted the interview with Yukiko Sugihara on January 20, 1995. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum received the tapes of the interview from the Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project in March 2001.
