    Interview Summary
    Joseph P. Weber, born on March 16, 1922 in Oberwart, Austria, discusses his childhood in Oberwart, a small town near the Hungarian border; the antisemitism he experienced in school, and his move to a high school in Vienna; witnessing the Anschluss in March 1938; being expelled from school because of antisemitic laws; the loss of his family's business; the family's voyage to Shanghai, China in 1938 on an Italian vessel; being sheltered in a group home funded in part by the Sassoon and Kadoorie families; Mr. Weber describes his experiences working and living in Shanghai during the war years, and meeting his wife and marrying in 1947. He discusses leaving Shanghai in 1947 and immigrating to Bolivia, after a failed attempt to immigrate to the United States. Mr. Weber describes his life in Bolivia, his immigration with his family to the United States in 1956, his initial struggles to establish himself and his eventual success of his business.

    The Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project conducted the interview with Joseph P. Weber on February 4, 1998 and February 25, 1998. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum received the tapes of the interview from the Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project in December 2001.
