    Hanna Zeidler-Cowan (née Kuntslinger), born in 1920 in Berlin, Germany, discusses her childhood in Berlin; her memories of Hitler's rise to power; her education in Jewish schools and involvement in Jewish youth groups; the events of Kristallnacht; her fiancé’s escape to Shanghai, China, and her decision to follow him there; her mother's decision to prevent her brother from accompanying her in anticipation of visas to England; her journey to Shanghai; living initially in the French district and then being relocated to the Hong Kew ghetto in 1941; conditions in the ghetto; her memories of bombings; learning of the fates of her mother and brother after the war; her work with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (the Joint) in Shanghai; her immigration to San Francisco in 1947; and her life after her husband's death in 1965 in London and San Francisco.

    The Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project conducted the interview with Hanna Zeidler-Cowan on September 3, 1997. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum received the tapes of the interview from the Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project in December 2001.
