    Interview Summary
    Maryanne Wynschenk, born circa 1937 in Medan, Indonesia, discusses her early childhood in Medan, Sumatra, Indonesia; her memories of the Japanese invasion of the island in January 1942; being deported to an internment camp built from a school two weeks later; the conditions in the camp; the education she received; her experiences in the camp; being transferred with her family to another internment camp; the harsher conditions there and her experiences; being liberated by United States soldiers in August 1945; the threat to Dutch citizens by Indonesian extremists; the camp they lived in while being held under protective custody; her family's return to Holland in April 1946; her immigration to the United States at a later time; and her life in the US.

    The Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project conducted the interview with Maryanne Wynschenk on September 20, 1989. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum received the tapes of the interview from the Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project in December 2002.
