    Edith Schiftan discusses her childhood in Vienna, Austria; her assimilated middle-class childhood; the changes she experienced following the German annexation of Austria in March 1938; her father's arrest; his release on the condition that the family would leave; their decision to go to Shanghai, China; her experiences in Shanghai and the conditions there; the work she performed; her marriage; immigrating to the United States in 1947 with her husband; and her life in San Francisco, CA.
