    Interview Summary
    Emmie Vida (née Koppel), born on May 28, 1909 in Monchengladbach, Germany, discusses her childhood in Monchengladbach; her family life; her education in a Catholic school; her marriage; her move with her husband to Czechoslovakia in 1930; her experiences there and the birth of her children; her parents' decision to immigrate to the United States in 1938 and their efforts to help her leave with her husband and children; the circumstances under which she and her family were able to emigrate, the challenges to arrange the paperwork, and their efforts to bring their possessions; the journey through the Netherlands to the ship that carried them to New Jersey; the challenges of immigrant life in America; her husband's work as a United States Army chaplain in World War II and the Korean War; their move to Maryland and their subsequent move to California; and their life in California.
