Eric Schmidt, born in the United States, discusses his university years in Berkeley, CA; his initial visit to Shanghai, China and his decision to live there later; the work he performed, the changes he observed as the war became a more likely event, and his time in an internment camp created by the Japanese; the conditions in the camps and the brutality of the guards; his work with the US State Department in Shanghai after the war; and his return to the United States in 1948.
