Erich Arnold was the elder of two sons. Their father was Catholic, and their mother was Jewish. Erich and his brother were both sent to a forced labor camp during World War II. All members of his immediate family survived. Erich committed suicide in the mid-1950s.

- The letter was written by Erich Arnold in Munich, Germany, on Jan. 8, 1947, and sent to his aunt and uncle parents of donor's wife in the United States. The photograph, an image of Erich Arnold, was taken in Sept. 1948. The letter and photograph were donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 2005 by Manfred Landecker.
