Consists of correspondence, most of which was sent by Ludwig Sommer in Kassel, Germany, between 1938-1940, to his sister and brother-in-law, Kathi and Berthold Speier, who were then living in New York, NY. Ludwig Sommer was able to emigrate from Germany to Rhodesia. Also includes an article from a German newspaper, circa 1939, regarding Jewish emigration, and correspondence from the Justice Department and from HIAS in November 1944 informing Kathi Speier that her mother, Johanna Sommer, can be issued an American visa. International Tracing Service correspondence, included in the collection, Johanna Sommer was deported in 1942 and perished. Accretion: prewar photographs, including of emigration of family to New York in 1938; correspondence, most of which was sent by Ludwig Sommer from S. Rhodesia and Capetown, South Africa, addressed to Berthold Speir in New York.
