    Overview

    Interview Summary
    Simon Reise was born Shimon Rajze on October 19, 1931 in Warsaw, Poland to Ephraim and Hinda (née Rosenberg) Reise. He discusses being the youngest of six children; his siblings Avraham (b. 1914), Shaul ( b. 1916), Paula, Mordecai, and Shmuel; his father being a WWI veteran running a cigarette kiosk; his family being religious and living in a Jewish neighborhood; being away at a summer camp when Germany invaded Poland; running away with his brother Mordecai, while his mother left with his brother Shmuel; travelling with his sister Paula by train to Białystok; reuniting with his mother and brothers in Ukraine; getting deported with his mother, Shmuel, and Paula by the Russians to a gulag; getting released in 1941 after Germany invaded Russia and taking a train to Kazakhstan, arriving in October 1941; recovering from typhoid fever in a hospital; working in the fields; his brothers Mordecai and Avraham getting drafted; returning to Poland after the end of the war; going with a youth group to Vienna, Austria where he attended an American run school in Mauthausen; his mother and sister going to Salzburg; attending a machinist vocational school; his father and brother Shaul likely perishing during the war; his sister marrying and having a son in Germany; going to Italy in 1946; going to Israel around 1948; working as a machinist; he and his brother serving in the Israeli Army; going to Brazil and then immigrating to the United States; marrying and settling in New York; and later moving to Florida. After the interview, Simon showed a photo of himself at 19 in Germany, and a photo of his sister in 1938.
