    Harry Sydel (né Seidel), born on March 6, 1930 in Breslau, Germany (now Wroclaw, Poland), discusses his family; Kristallnacht; the destruction of the synagogue; traveling to Shanghai, China with his father and stepmother; staying at the Embankment House; living in Hongkew; the Japanese occupation; his bar mitzvah; his brother’s deportation to Auschwitz concentration camp; working in a sausage factory; the bombing of a Japanese radio station on July 20, 1945; working for the Joint Distribution Committee (the Joint) starting circa 1946; leaving Shanghai for the United States in 1947; and arriving in the United States on January 9, 1948.
