    Description
    The collection consists of an identification card and certificate issued to Jan Josef Gasior, originally of Dukla, Poland, confirming that he was a persecuted Pole who was imprisoned in Auschwitz and Buchenwald from 1942-1945. A photograph of Gasior and his second wife, Maria Grzesik, is also included.

    Biography
    Jan Jozef Gasior was born on August 4, 1904 in Dukla, Poland to Adolf Gasior and Helene Gasior (née Rucinska). His family was Catholic, and Jan worked as a carpenter. Jan was a widower and had a son, Stanislaus Gasior, and a daughter, Liudmila Irena, from his first marriage.

    Jan was arrested in Krakow in early 1942 and deported to Auschwitz on Mach 8, 1942. He was transferred to Buchenwald in October 1943. He was liberated from Auschwitz by the United States Army on April 11, 1945. After liberation, he was in Augsburg displaced persons camp. He married fellow displaced survivor Maria Grzesik in 1946. Maria Grzesik (1903-1957) had three children with her first husband, Augustin Grzesik (1898-1939): Stanislawa Grzesik (later Stella Arbuzow,1925-2012), Edward Grzesik (1927-2006), and Ryszard Grzesik (later Richard Grzesik (1932-2005). In 1948, Jan, Maria, Edward, and Ryszard immigrated to Brazil. Maria’s daughter Stanislawa and her family also immigrated to Brazil in 1948, and later immigrated to the United States.
