Polish and Jewish inhabitants of Aleksandrow Kujawski hold their arms in the air after their arrest by German soldiers during the conquest of Poland.
These men may have been arrested as hostages to deter civilian attacks on German soldiers. Should such an attack have occurred in the area, these men would have been shot. This was standard operating procedure for the German army from the very first days of the war.
