Photograph | Photograph Number: 08216

Group portrait of Gavra Mandil's class at the Albanian school he attended in Kavaja. Gavra is marked with a number 30 (first row, at the far right).

This picture was taken shortly after the Mandils arrived in Kavaja. Gavra, who had attended first grade in a different location posing as a Christian, was hiding as a Moslem in Kavaja. When called by his new teacher in Kavaja to go to a religion class, six-year-old Gavra became confused and did not know whether to attend the Christian or Islamic class. It was only after the teacher scolded him, saying "Ismail, what is the matter with you?" that Gavra remembered his new religious identity.
