Photograph | Photograph Number: N02394

View of the "Nazi Society" segment in the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum permanent exhibition.

The segment uses photographs, film, artifacts and text to describe the Nazification of German society. The display includes a Nazi banner that once flew over Hitler's mountain retreat near Berchtesgaden in Bavaria. In 1920, at Hitler's urging, the Nazi party adopted the swastika as its official symbol. A law passed on September 15, 1935 declared the Nazi banner to be the national flag of Germany.
