Photograph | Photograph Number: 95632

Two female passengers of the Exodus 1947 wait on the dock in Haifa holding infants who were born during the voyage.

Pictured on the left, holding an infant, is Bella Wanderovska Baron, a doctor in the Maapila (women volunteers). The baby's mother died in childbirth, and the baby died at three weeks of age. The baby's father, Yehoshua Abramowitz, was left to bring up his daughter, Sara Abramowitz (later Singer). He remarried and settled in the U.S. The mother and baby were recently honored in a cemetery in Haifa where other sailors are buried.
