Photograph | Photograph Number: 38974

A school class gathers by a horse-drawn sleigh during a winter nature trip to the countryside.

Only three boys survived the Holocaust as teenage partisans: Layzer Balon (sitting in the snow, left, next to the teacher's feet); Moshe Edelstein (standing, third from left); and Reuven Paikowski (top row, third from left, biting his lips). The teacher, Leibke Botwinik was severely wounded by the Polish Home Army. Hirshke Mendelowitch (front row, fourth from right) was also a victim of the Polish Home Army. All the others were murdered in the September 1941 massacre in Eisiskes.
