Hayyyim, the shtetl's leading Communist and anti-Zionist, ordered the closing of the Hebrew School, banned all Zionist organizations and the speaking of Hebrew during the Soviet occupation of Eisiskes (June 15, 1940 - June 23, 1941). Hayyim was killed by fellow Soviet Partisans. Etchke survived the war in the Soviet Union.
