Portrait of Hermann Scherchen, German conductor.
In 1939, Frieda Belinfante won the prestigious award for new conductors in his summer class in Neuchatel, Switzerland. After Belinfante's escape from France to Switzerland in the winter of 1943-44, Scherchen saved her from being sent back over the border by verifying that she was a Dutch citizen and his former pupil. Her Jewish companion during the flight, Toni van Praagh, was sent back by the Swiss police and died in Auschwitz.
