- Abraham Zemach was ordained in June 1941. The following year he was granted a commission as a chaplain in the US Army. He served as a chaplain in the 76th US Infantry Division during World War II and participated in the liberation of slave laborers in Germany in April 1945. In Schmilln and Altenburg he conducted services for hospitalized female Jewish survivors. In June he helped organize a tranport of survivors to Switzerland for the JDC. After the war, Rabbi Zemach aided Jewish displaced persons by serving as Advisor on Jewish Affairs for General Mark Clark in Austria. Among his duties was to help organize relief supplies, work with anonymous Hagannah members and escort the Anglo-American Commission of Inquiry on Palestine throughout the American zone of Austria. Rabbi Zemach continued to work with Jewish displaced persons until he returned to the States in April 1946.
