    Biography
Deborah Maarsen-Laufer is the daughter of Wilhelm Laufer, a Hungarian who moved to Holland in 1933, and Elizabeth Betsy Zwarenstein. Deborah was born on February 5, 1942, and she had two older sisters, Gisela, born in 1939 and Margreet, born in 1940. Her father owned a shop in Rotterdam, but after the shop was bombed in 1940, the family moved to Amsterdam and Wilhelm reopened a business there. Because Wilhelm was Hungarian, the family did not have to wear badges and avoided deportation until 1944. However in 1944, together Deborah, her mother and two sisters were sent to Westerbork, Ravensbrueck and Belsen, where they were liberated in April 1945. Her father was sent to Buchenwald and liberated, after a death march, in Theresienstadt. After the war, the entire family reunited in Holland, and Wilhelm and Elizabeth had three more children. Deborah later married Eddie Maarsen, who had survived the war as a hidden child.
