- Biography
- Martin (the father of the donor) and Ernst Wertheim were the sons of Erich Wertheim (b. February 27, 1895, Hannover) and Margarete nee Schwabe Wertheim (b. August 11, 1898). Martin was born on July 31 1929 and Ernst was born on August 23, 1923, both in Brackel. They were raised in Brakel, Germany where their family had a corn farm and factory. Martin and Ernst were placed on a Kindertransport to England. After their arrival the brothers were separated. Martin was sent to Manchester and was assisted by the 45 Aid Society. Margarete had been in the Jewish hospital and took quite ill soon after the boys departure. She passed away soon after on March 14, 1939. Erich remarried a close family friend, Eva Elli Flechteim (b. 1898) in Hannover on June 10, 1940. Her husband Richard Flechtheim has died in the Hamburg Jewish Hospital on August 18, 1939. Erich and Elli had heard that conditions would be easier for married couples. The night before Erich was about to be deported,he entrusted the family's photo album and several household items to a neighbor for safe keeping. On December 15, 1941 Erich was sent to Riga where he perished. His wife Eva Elli perished in Stutthof. After the war Ernst returned to Germany and the neighbor returned all of their possessions to him.
