Close-up portrait of a Russian woman and infant awaiting repatriation.

Photograph | Photograph Number: 51065

Close-up portrait of a Russian woman and infant awaiting repatriation.

Original Caption: "As Allied armies on the Western Front sweep eastward across the Reich, they are freeing tens of thousands of foreign workers from Nazi slave labor camps. These displaced persons are temporarily placed in repatiation camps until they can be transported to their homelands by the Allies. At the camps, they are carefully questioned to make sure they are not German soldiers disguised as civilians. At one displaced persons center, 28 out of 3,000 men proved to be German troops attempting to flee into Belgium and Holland.

By March 19, 1945, freed French slave workers were arriving in Paris at the rate of 2,000 daily and it was estimated that approximately 2,500,000 French nationals were still inside Germany. Estimates of the total number of foreign workers in the Reich run as high as 20,000,000, most of them being Russians or Poles. U.S. General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander-in-Cheif Allied Expoditionary Force has requested the United Nations relief and Rehibilitation Administration to train between 3,500 and 6,000 persons to operate assembly centers, and 21 UNRRA teams had arrived in Europe by March 31.

These pictures show a few of the 5,000 displaced persons registered at a single repatiation camp on the Western Front during 12 days. "

This Photo Shows: A smiling Russian woman and her child await transportation for the frist part of the long journey home from the Reich. At one slave camp liberated by U.S. troops, Russian girls told their liberators they worked 12 hours a day in a factory and were beaten if they could not lift heavy bombs."
