A group of the civilians who had been living in a mine stand under a white flag of surrender after arrival of Ninth U.S. Army troops.
Original Caption: "About 7,000 German civilians recently surrendered to Ninth U.S. Army troops after going with little food or water for four days in a shelter in the shafts of a mine slagpile in the Ninth Army sector east of the Rhine River, Germany. Previously, when they attempted to hoist the white flag, Nazi troops fired into their midst with machine guns."
