- Donald Chumley is the son of Irving Rosenberg and Ennis Rosenberg (nee Chumley). Irving was an American Jew whose family had emigrated from Minsk in response to pogroms. During the depression, Irving found employment working at the blackjack table of a cruise ship. There he met Ennis Chumley who was working as a hairdresser, and the two became engaged. They took a honeymoon voyage in 1932 en board the Leviathan, where Irving continued to work. The ship stopped at Hamburg and Bremen, and the couple went ashore. There, they came upon and photographed Hitler rallies. They also purchased commercial photographs of Hitler and pasted both the candid and professional photographs into an album. Ennis annotated the album pages with their impressions of Hitler on the eve of his assuming power and their worries about the future of Germany. According to the donor, Ennis later contacted the FBI and showed them the photographs in case there was any useful information.
