- Biography
- Chana Rosenbaum is the daughter of Fela Zyndorf and Szlamek Rosenbaum. Fela was born on December 6, 1924 in Slawkow to Szymon Zyndorf and Chana Sztrauch. Her father owned a bakery in Skala. In 1936 Fela came to Bedzin to study in the Furstenberg Gymnasium. Her parents followed her in 1938. Following the start of World War II, they were all incarcerated in the Bedzin Srodula ghetto. In October 1941 Fela was sent to the Blechammer concentration camp, and then in 1943 transferred to Peterswaldau, a sub-camp of Gross Rosen camp and Bobrek. Her parents were deported from Bedzin to Auschwitz where they perished. After the war Fela returned briefly to Bedzin but then traveled with the Bricha to the Landsberg displaced persons camp via Vienna and Linz.
In Landsberg Fela met Szlamek Rosenbaum. He was born on April 22, 1924 in Dabrowa. He had survived nine concentration camps including Markstadt, Skarzysko, Dachau, Buchenwald and Gross Rosen. Fela and Szlamek married on March 27, 1947 in Landsberg. In May 1947 Fela was able to reach Palestine, and their daughter Chana, named for Fela's mother, was born in November 1947. During that time, Szlamek Rosenbaum worked for the Bricha before reuniting with his wife and daughter.
