Photograph | Photograph Number: 82392

A survivor of the death march to Munich.

The original Signal Corps caption reads, "Death march. Solomon Silverstein, 22, a Jew born in upper Silesia, prisoner of the Nazis since 1939 [?] was shot and left for dead in a forest. He is believed to be the only survivor of a group of 300 prisoners who set out on a march to Munich. He saw scores of allied prisoners and slaves shot by guards when they could no longer march. Playing dead while the Germans continued with the remaining prisoners on their death march, he returned alive to be picked up bu [sic] medics of the 44th Div., outside their aid station where he was treated."
