Portrait of Count Folke Bernadotte.

Count Folke Bernadotte (1895-1948), Swedish statesman. During World War II he represented the Swedish Red Cross, negotiating with Himmler for the release of more than 7,000 Scandinavian nationals from concentration camps, and of 10,000 women from Ravensbrueck. He was assassinated in Jerusalem by a group connected to the Lohamei Herut Yisrael, which opposed his mediation efforts between Israel and the invading Arab countries during the Israeli War of Independence.
