An American GI speaks at a candlelighting ceremony on the first night of Hanukkah.

Photograph | Photograph Number: 89669

An American GI speaks at a candlelighting ceremony on the first night of Hanukkah.

The banner reads: "Remember the six million who died as martyrs, 17 December 1942."

The ceremony appears to be commemorating an event which took place on December 17, 1942. This may be the Allied Nations Statement on Mass Murder, which states explicitly that the German authorities were engaging in mass murder of the European Jews. The first night of Hanukkah was on December 17 in 1946.
