    Description
    REEL 1: The annexation of Austria [Anschluss]. Hitler's motorcade through the streets, saluting citizens, flag waving, vast and enthusiastic crowds. In Graz (poor sound), brief SEQ of unrest, crowds in the streets. Police block street off. Horses are nervous. Good atmosphere of street-level activity and excitement (VQ: not great, grainy spotty, soft). Picturesque town, everyone saluting. Shots of crowd. "Oesterreich ist frei!" "Rucktritt der osten!" "Oesterreich is Nat--sozialistich." Vienna at night. Military parade. Tanks go by the Cafe Heinrichhof. CU of General Guderian(?). Boy and family stand above doorway/marquee and watch the crowd. Daytime military march in Graz (VQ: dirty, scratched, not good). Hitler in motorcade. Great music. Band. Flags. Crowd heils (VQ: good, bright). Seyss-Inquart. INT, Hitler gives a speech. MCU up to seated group. Himmler present and bald man. Sun streams into hall, hits the audience. "Ein Fuhrer, Ein Volk, Ein Reich" banner. Hitler continues. MS, HAS crowd cranes to see. Woman with binoculars. Salzburg. Crowd is dressed nicely. Crowd heils as train goes by. Military trucks cross over bridge into town. "Wilkommen Salzburg" sign. Crowd is joyous. Sense of celebration and excitement.

    REEL 2: Austria Day, big military event. CU of military outfits. Tiny parachute floats above sky. "Ein Volk, Ein Fuhrer." VLS from above. View of soldiers. Lutze speaks. Salzburg parade at Ringstrasse. Goosestepping. Daytime shots of KZ-Wollersdorf (where Austrian "anti-socialists" were kept) in flames. Vast interior of barracks/ warehouse? Barbed wire, broken glass. Celebration at night, buildings are burnt to the ground. Everyone heils/salutes the flames. Minister Klausner and Gauleiter Buerckel speak. Dramatic shots. Grossdeutschen Reiches at the Rathaus in Vienna. Goebbels stands at balcony. Doves fly up, sirens sound. Big crowd salutes Hitler as he arrives on balcony. Dr. Seyss-Inquart. Burckel speaks. Saluting.

    Film Provenance
    The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum purchased this from the Bundesarchiv in Berlin, Germany in September 1991. The footage was transferred at Bibo TV in Germany and obtained as research for the Museum's Permanent Exhibition.
    Note
    J. Stumpfhaus documentary, "Eye of the Third Reich," indicates Walter Frentz, cameraman, accompanied Hitler to Vienna.
