    Josef Schmid, born in 1935 in Graefelfing, Germany, describes his family history; his father membership in the Nazi Party in 1933; his mother's anti-Hitler stance; his father's work; living in Krakow, Poland; his father leaving the NSDAP in 1944 upon discovering the mass murder of Jews; moving to Munich, Germany; the sight of a death march; and his life after the war.

    This is a witness interview of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's Perpetrators, Collaborators, and Witnesses: The Jeff and Toby Herr Testimony Initiative, a multi-year project to record the testimonies of non-Jewish witnesses to the Holocaust. Wendy Lower, on behalf of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, coordinated the interview with Josef Schmid in Germany on April 15, 2011. The interview was received by the Museum's Oral History Branch in 2011.
