- Consists of the typescript of "The Relief of Belsen Concentration Camp: Recollections & Reflections of a British Army Doctor" written by Major General James Alexander Deans Johnston, circa 1970. The typescript includes information on conditions at Bergen-Belsen under Nazi control and during liberation, as well as description of medical measures taken by the British for the benefit of former inmates of the camp. Also included is a photocopy of a photograph of James Johnston and a retype of his obituary from "The Daily Telegraph."

James A. D. Johnston was born in 1911 and educated at Glasgow University. He was a member of the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War II and served as a senior medical officer at the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.

- According to the donor, the piece was written shortly after Johnston's retirement in 1970. The typescript was given to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives by James Johnston's widow, Enid Johnston, in Dec. 1991 via Dr. Hadassah Rosensaft. The photograph of James Johnston was transferred to Radu Ioanid of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Permanent Exhibition Department for use in the museum's Permanent Exhibit at the request of Hadassah Rosensaft.
