    Overview

    Interview Summary
Agnes Allison was born Agnes Suzannah Halàsz on October 28, 1926 in Budapest, Hungary. Agnes was the older of two daughters. Agnes attended a private German school which was established for the children of diplomats. As a young child Agnes remembers being aware of the Polish refugees arriving in Budapest and the Hitler Youth Movement at school. Her family converted to Catholicism in 1939 to improve their chances of survival. For a short while Agnes worked for the Germans as a receptionist; although she did not receive pay she did receive protection. In early December 1944, her family arranged to be hidden by a priest, Father Reile. The family remained in hiding until April 1945, and it was only then that she learned the fate of the European Jews, including members of her own family who were murdered in concentration camps. She holds the Arrow Cross responsible for the deaths of Budapest Jews
