    Bernard Broclawski describes his childhood in Pabianice, Poland; working at age 13 in textiles to help support his family; his socialist political leanings; his involvement in a Jewish socialist group from 1936-1939; his awareness of political events in Germany; his being drafted into the Polish army; his time in the Soviet-occupied part of Poland; meeting his father and brother in Grodno, Poland (Hrodno, Belarus); his work as a machinist in Siberia in January 1940; his work as a Geman-language teacher in 1941; his arrest for counter-revolutionary speech in 19443; his experiences in prison from 1944-1948; his return to Poland in 1948; his marriage and the birth of his daughter; his studies at the University of Łódź; his decision to leave Poland with his family in 1968; their immigration to the United States with the assistance of HIAS (Hebrew Immigration Aid Society); and his life in the United States.

    The Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project conducted the interview with Bernard Broclawski on November 12, 1991. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum received the tapes of the interview from the Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project in October 2002.
