- The collection consists of documents and photographs related to the Holocaust experiences of Josef Helfgott, originally of Tomaszów Mazowiecki, Poland. Documents include a family tree, business card, death certificate, restitution paperwork, clippings, a photocopy of a postwar identification card identifying the camps Josef had been imprisoned in, and a photocopy of the marriage certificate for Josef’s relative Miriam Helfgott and Moses-Hersch Daum. Photographs include prewar depictions of the Helfgott family in Tomaszów Mazowiecki and postwar depictions of Josef in Hannover prior to his immigration to the United States in 1950. Also included are two photographs of Josef’s wife Dwora Helfgott, including a small portrait Josef carried with him during the war.

Josef Helfgott (1910-1986) was born September 9, 1910 to Aron and Ruza (Rajsla) Helfgott in Tomaszów Mazowiecki, Poland. He had at least 3 siblings: Manya Helfgott, Pearl Helfgott, and Israel Helfgott. Josef married Dwora Rubin (1914-1942) in 1936, and they had one daughter, Chana Helfgott. Josef worked as a carpenter in Tomaszów Mazowiecki and Dwora worked as a clerk for Josef’s parents’ business.
By January 1940 Josef and his family were forced into the ghetto in Tomaszów Mazowiecki. In October 1942, Dwora and Chana were deported from the ghetto to Treblinka where they were murdered. In May 1942, Josef was deported to Blizin. He was subsequently imprisoned in Auschwitz, Melk, and Ebensee. He was liberated from Ebensee in May 1945. Josef moved to Hannover, Germany in July 1945. He immigrated to the United States in November 1950 via Bremerhaven and settled in New York.
Josef’s parents and his siblings Manya and Israel were all murdered in the Holocaust.
