    Overview

    Description
    The collection primarily consists of a photograph album and loose photographs taken by Arnold Grossblatt while serving with the United States Army in Europe. The bulk appear to be taken in May-August 1945 and depict London; Épernay, France; Belgium; Bad Godesberg, Bonn, Salach, Berchtesgaden, and Munich, Germany; Innsbruck, Austria; and Buchenwald and Dachau concentration camps. Many of the photographs are annotated in English on the reverse. Also included is army paperwork of Grossblatt, two letters sent to his parents in September 1945, and correspondence and documents related to his accidental death in September 1945. Included with this material is a draft of a letter to President Harry Truman that his mother Miriam Grossblatt authored.

    Biography
    Arnold Grossblatt (1924-1945) was born on May 4, 1924 in Baltimore, MD to Jacob Grossblatt (nicknamed Jake,1898-1964) and Miriam Lamdin Grossblatt (1904-1995). Both of his parents were immigrants, his father from Lutsk, Ukraine, and his mother from Russia. Jacob had been a tailor, and then became a kosher butcher. Miriam worked alongside him, and the family lived above the shop. Arnold had three sisters: Rosalie (b. 1933), Anita (1928-2017), and Beverly (1936-2020).

    Arnold graduated from the Baltimore City College high school in 1942. He enlisted in the Army on April 15, 1943. Arnold served in numerous parts of Europe including London; Épernay, France; Belgium; Bad Godesberg, Bonn, Salach, Berchtesgaden,and Munich, Germany; Innsbruck, Austria; and Buchenwald and Dachau concentration camps. He was killed on September 29, 1945 when he was struck by an oncoming train after returning to Salach.
