- Provenance
- The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum received this collection from the Vatican Apostolic Archives (Archivio Apostolico Vaticano) in 2022 as part of the Museum’s Vatican Archives Initiative. The Museum sent a team of scholars and archivists to Vatican City to survey the Vatican’s archival materials for the pontificate of Pope Pius XII (1939-1958), to which Pope Francis granted access in March 2020. The Museum’s team selected portions of the archives for digital imaging to make accessible in Washington, DC in support of rigorous scholarship, education, and interpretation. These new resources will continue the Museum’s extensive work with theologians, clergy, and scholars who are interested in the role of Christianity and Christians, in particular the Catholic Church and its views of Jews historically and during the Holocaust.
