Vatican City. Secretariat of State. Allied Migration Section - Biography
-
The Secretariat of State (Vatican City) is the oldest department in the Roman Curia, the central papal governing bureaucracy of the Catholic Church. It is headed by the Cardinal Secretary of State and performs all of the political and diplomatic functions of the Holy See. The Secretariat is currently divided into two sections: the Section for General Affairs and the Section for Relations with States. During the 19th and most of the 20th century, the Section for Relations with States was called the Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs.
The Allied Migration Section (MSA) was a department within the Secretary of State responsible for dealing, mainly in English, with the political and military representatives of the Allies and for handling correspondence with private individuals seeking to emigrate from Europe during the Second World War and the post-war period (1940-1961).

- Provenance
- The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum received this collection from the Vatican Apostolic Archives (Archivio Apostolico Vaticano) in 2022 as part of the Museum’s Vatican Archives Initiative. The Museum sent a team of scholars and archivists to Vatican City to survey the Vatican’s archival materials for the pontificate of Pope Pius XII (1939-1958), to which Pope Francis granted access in March 2020. The Museum’s team selected portions of the archives for digital scanning to make accessible in Washington, DC in support of rigorous scholarship, education, and interpretation. These new resources will continue the Museum’s extensive work with theologians, clergy, and scholars who are interested in the role of Christianity and Christians, in particular the Catholic Church and its views of Jews historically and during the Holocaust.
