    Biography
Yulian (Julian) Rafes is the son of Itzhack Rafes and Helena Verbloska Rafes. He was born on February 4, 1924 in Vilna where his father (b. born January 8, 1890) was a physician and his mother was a teacher. Yulian has two siblings, Michael born in 1920 and Esther born in 1915. The family was not religious, and Itzhack headed the Socialist Bund in Vilna. In 1941 Julian left for Tambov in Russia where he worked as an instructor for children. Then he joined his family who had been evacuated to Cheliabinsk in the Ural Mountains. Both of his siblings had been drafted into the army. Yulian was too young and therefore exempted. As the University of Kiev had also been evacuated there, Julian was able to enroll as a medical student in December 1941. In 1941 he married to Dusia Geskina, a fellow medical student from Neproprefovst, Ukrainia.
