A painter who is not an inmate works at Camp Vught and every day he brings extra bread which he leaves on a windowsill. One day an inmate asks him a dangerous favor: to deliver a letter to his wife. The painter memorizes the letter and visits the prisoner's wife. Out of gratitude, she give him apples "for the way home." The next day he puts the apples on the windowsill.
