Overview
- Summary
- Set in the Rhine River Valley in Germany, this memoir recalls people and events in the life of a young woman during the rise of Nazism. The collection of stories allows us to see how a secure, happy childhood under a benign government, diminishes under encroaching Nazi power: violence against Jews, forced membership in Hitler Youth, separation from family members. We experience how the war years add physical dangers and mental anguish followed by eventual occupation by American troops. -- back cover
