Volume of author's autobiographical trilogy covering his childhood and youth in Czerniaków, Warsaw, prior to World War II. This is the first time the work has been published uncensored. The originally published volume, Pięć lat kacetu, describes Grzesiuk's experiences of forced labor and life in a concentration camp; he spent almost five years in Mauthausen until the camp was liberated by the American Army. The last volume, Na marginesie życia, published after his death in 1963, documents his struggle with the tuberculosis he contracted in the concentration camp, and life in post-war Poland.
