- Summary
The cattle trade was an important line of business which for generations was in Jewish hands in East Frisia. Deals with the fate of Jewish cattle dealers before and during the Nazi regime. Mentions antisemitic activities at the end of the 19th century and attempts from the early 1930s to exclude Jewish cattle dealers from the profession. This process took longer than foreseen by the authorities, since the profession was nonexistent among non-Jews. This enabled Jewish dealers to continue to work until 1937, but then, due to the Aryanization of their trade, they had no choice but to sell their property much below the actual value. Deals also with the social and economic isolation of the Jews, the lack of help from the different Christian Churches, and the attitude of the population to the persecution of the Jews - in most cases they did not participate in the persecution, but also did not help.
