Johnny Smythe was one of the first black airmen in the Royal Air Force. He successfully navigated 27 bombing missions over Germany. He was shot down on a bombing mission over Germany in 1943. After the war he was a senior officer aboard the ship Empire Windrush. He trained as a barrister in London, and became Attorney General of Sierra Leone.
