    Overview

    Summary
"Leslie Fazekas (born László Frenkel, 1925) was raised in a Jewish family in Debrecen, Hungary. During World War II, he was able to continue his education up until March 1944, the German occupation of Hungary. He was soon subject to anti-Jewish laws and sent to do forced labour, and then he and his family were held in the Debrecen ghetto and a brickyard, from where they were deported to Strasshof, Austria, to do forced labour. While in captivity as a forced labourer in a factory near Vienna, Austria, Leslie wrote a diary, in Hungarian, from August 1944 to April 1945. He addressed almost all of his diary entries to his girlfriend, Judit (Judy), whom he was separated from in Strasshof. Leslie's diary is a rich description of his life and experience in the Lager, the camp he was held in. By September 1944, Leslie and Judy had found a way to write letters and postcards to each other. Leslie was able to hold onto his diary throughout the war years and after, and when he and Judy reunited, and later married, they held dear all the letters they had been able to keep as well. This volume comprises the English translations of Leslie's diary and letters as well as his postwar memoir, which describes his childhood, his young adulthood before and during the Nazi occupation, his liberation and survival of the Holocaust, and his postwar life as an immigrant to Canada in 1956."-- Provided by publisher.
