- There are hundreds of Soviet memorials and military cemeteries in both West and East Germany. They are a reminder of the many Soviet citizens who lost their lives as soldiers of the Red Army in the fight against war and fascism, as abducted slave laborers or in the camps. There are 3,400 places in Germany where Soviet war dead were buried. The Federal Government committed itself contractually to Russia and Ukraine to protect and preserve these memorial sites.
