    Overview

    Summary
There are hundreds of Soviet memorials and military cemeteries in both West and East Germany. They are a reminder of the many Soviet citizens who lost their lives as soldiers of the Red Army in the fight against war and fascism, as abducted slave laborers or in the camps. There are 3,400 places in Germany where Soviet war dead were buried. The Federal Government committed itself contractually to Russia and Ukraine to protect and preserve these memorial sites. They are memorials against forgetting, places of remembrance of the terrible suffering that the Second World War brought on the peoples of Europe. On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the liberation, this bilingual image-text volume in German and Russian documents for the first time the most important Soviet monuments and cenotaphs on German territory. With its wealth of motifs and the complexity of images and text, the book is a unique historical document and testimony to a culture of remembrance that is essential for the historical and humanistic self-image of the German-- translated from the publisher's announcement.
