    Description
    667 J: At the "Comite Francais d'Assistance aux Refugees," branch of the American Joint Distribution Committee in Paris. The Committee provides legal and juridicial advice, to help the refugees stay in France and prepare their definitive settlement in some country. LS, relief (money) provided to Austrian refugee. CU, refugee signing receipt. LS, crowd refugees waiting in line. LS, refugees waiting in the lobby of the "Comite d'Assistance," and showing papers to officials of the Committee. MS, table where refugees show their identification papers to employee. Same, another angle. 02:52:34 LS, meeting of the Committee's Council: from left to right, Colonel Durieux, former commanding officer of the Republican Guard; Albert Levy, President of the Committee; Gaston Kahn, managing director of the Committee; Raymond Raoul Lambert, Secretary General. The council discusses the problem of Jewish settlement in the world, over a map/spreadsheet, smoking. Woman bringing files.

CUs, "Reise Pass" marked in red with J. 02:55:20 Window teller approving passports. Jews handing in passports and receiving identification slips, before being allocated lodgings. MS, employees at desks (including Miss Pereira, Secretary of the Committee) processing refugees, orderly.

    02:57:05 667 N: Scenes in the Dutch Israelite Hospital in Amsterdam. According to NARA documentation, "the patients in this ward are all victims of Nazi brutality." Patients in the ward, nurse tending to the sick. 02:57:46 Stone masonry carving "Nederlandsch Israelitisch Armbestoor, Zeikenhuis" (Dutch Jewish Hospital).

    02:58:09 667 O: Nieuwesluis Jewish Settlement Camp near Zuider Zee, Holland. Jews are sent here to learn carpentry, cabinet making, and farming to equip them for life in Palestine. Most of these Jews were students or professional men in Germany and Austria. Instructor and student in carpentry shop. CU, Jewish boy planing. 02:58:30 Young men in wash room. 02:59:06 Jews sitting at table, eating, smoking, chatting, exiting building, sunny. 02:59:56 General view of Settlement, with community building.     Biography
    Gaston Kahn (d. 1979) escaped Marseille at the end of 1943 and settled in the small village of Chauffayer en Champsaur along with other members of the Resistance. He received the "médaille de la Résistance" and "legion d’honneur" for his efforts to assist refugees. He worked with the AJDC for several years after the war. The USHMM Archives contains a Salvadoran citizenship paper (Mantello certificate) issued to the Kahn family in October 1943.
    Raymond-Raoul Lambert was deported to Auschwitz in 1943 with his wife and four children, all were gassed upon arrival in Birkenau.
