    Overview

    Description
Excerpts from Michael Kuball's documentary "Soul of a Century," with narration (sound quality is bad). The first scenes show the demolition of the Dortmund synagogue in October 1938. A handwritten title reads: "Where the good Dortmund beer is brewed (Dortmund Union Brewery), October 1938". Cut to Hitler Youth marching in Hamburg, 1941, and then to the battleship Bismarck firing a salute. Another title reads "A great day for Hamburg! Launching of the battleship Bismarck". Another title: "Leak of natural gas in Neuengamme, July 1939" A natural gas tower spews gas into the air.

00:52:04 ***The copyright for this footage, amateur films shot by Yitzhak Langer, belongs to the Steven Spielberg Jewish Film Archive in Jerusalem.*** Footage is poor quality. A ship leaves a harbor. People wave from the shore. The ship carries the tailor, Yitzhak Langer, and other Jews who have fled Vienna and are travelling to Palestine. Shots of Jews aboard ship, including several elderly religious men. A young man plays a trumpet as the ship approaches Palestine. The passengers disembark by climbing into a dinghy. Scenes in Jerusalem: camels and donkeys in the streets, people clothed in Arab garb, Jews pray at the Wailing Wall. Scenes from what seems to be a kibbutz: two men install a chain-link gate with a Star of David decoration, then till the soil.

00:53:41 Children play outside while on their holidays in Dachau, August 1939. They drink water from the Amper river, then bicycle down a country lane.

00:54:35 Duplicate footage of the Zloczow pogrom. See Story 1287 for description.

00:55:43 Footage shot by Josef Bielmayer, the baker who supplied bread to Dachau. Much of this duplicates footage found in Stories 1282 and 1285. The baker puts a reel of film on a projector. A girl named Edith, dressed for her first communion, enters the baker's house, followed by two of her friends. 00:56:12 Interiors of the house, showing the girls and women eating at a table. Color footage of SS guards at roll call at Dachau. An SS guard lifts the baker's son, Wulf, onto a horse. MK indicates that this version has better picture quality.
