Description: Compilation of footage from the tenure of Pope Pius XI (Pius XII's predecessor) on the occasion of his death. Title onscreen: "Universal Newsreel Vatican City Impressive Scenes Mark the Passing of Beloved Pontiff." Crowds outside the Vatican. Priests and others attend to Pope Pius XI as he lies in his bed. Pius XI visits the king and queen of Italy. 02:01:23 Pope Pius XI on the balcony at the church of St. John Lateran. Pius XI blessing the Alpine Chausseur (French mountain troops), followed by footage of Pius XI being crowned pope. 02:01:58 Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli (Pope Pius XII) walks toward the camera with other priests. Good CU of Pacelli, who is visiting Mount Vernon. Other views of Pius XII, including a visit to Fordham University (a small part of his speech, in English, is audible), a pilgrimage to Lourdes, his 1940 Easter blessing to crowds at the Vatican, a visit to St. John Lateran church "after a 93 year lapse" (according to the title card). Pius XII arrives to visit the king and queen of Italy.
